AI portrait or real photographer for LinkedIn? An honest decision guide

In the last year almost every new lead has asked if an AI app would do the same thing for ten euros. I answer calmly, not defensively. Here are the arguments I use in the pre-session consult.

01

Why it is a legitimate question, not an offence

I completely understand why many professionals test an AI generator before looking for a photographer. It is fast, it costs as much as a delivery pizza, it produces 50 variations in 10 minutes. If your profile photo is just a required field to tick, AI does the job. I have been photographing professionals for over 8 years and I have come to believe the right answer is not AI is fake, photography is real. The right answer is it depends on what you want to communicate and that is what we will unpack here.

02

What AI does well

Low cost, rapid iteration, no anxiety about facing the lens, the ability to try different aesthetics without logistics. For someone testing a new professional role, needing a quick variant for a one-off event, or refreshing an internal-only portrait, AI delivers something usable. I am not going to pretend otherwise. There are contexts where an AI portrait is enough and I am not bothered when clients tell me they used one for an internal slide. I am bothered only when they tell me they used one on their public LinkedIn.

03

What AI cannot do, and will not soon

The best frames from a real session appear in a very short moment: when the subject breathes normally, their skin relaxes, the hand gesture is theirs, and the gaze lands naturally on the lens. It happens roughly once every 30-40 frames and cannot be prompted. AI generates a statistical approximation of your face. Your aunt or your partner will see instantly that it is not you. It is not about resolution, it is about the micro-expression that makes you recognisable. As a rule, if someone knows you in person, they will feel that the AI image is someone else. And on LinkedIn, many of the people opening your profile have already met you somewhere.

04

How my clients decide. Three simple questions.

In the pre-session consult I ask people hesitating between AI and real photography exactly these three things. One, who is the audience that will see your portrait most often (potential clients you have not met, recruiters, partners, press)? Two, what is one missed contract or one missed interview worth because of a poor first impression? Three, do you want an image that lasts 2-3 years or one you regenerate when a new AI version drops? The answers lead 9 out of 10 clients to conclude that the real session is the smaller investment, not the larger one.

05

My concrete recommendation

Use AI for internal exploration, a quick slide, a secondary account avatar. Do not use it on your main LinkedIn profile, on your company team page, on press material, or on any board deck where you are introduced to decision-makers. For those contexts, the real session is the rule. I photograph in Cluj-Napoca and travel across Romania for company projects. The Essential package, with one outfit and five final portraits, costs the equivalent of 4-5 months of AI generation but delivers images you use for 3 years without redoing them.

FAQ

Questions related to the article

Can I be penalised on LinkedIn for an AI photo?

+

LinkedIn's terms require the image to authentically represent you. There is no automatic ban, but profiles with visibly generated portraits get user-reported more often and can be put under temporary review. The real risk is reputational rather than technical.

Does Google recognise a portrait is generated?

+

Increasingly so. Reverse image search often links AI portraits to prompts or public datasets, which can surface in background checks run by a serious partner. It is a risk you can avoid entirely by using a real photograph.

Can I use AI as a starting point and then book a real session?

+

Yes, it is an approach I recommend. Use AI to explore 2-3 aesthetics you like (classic corporate vs. editorial vs. casual). Bring those references to the pre-session consult and we calibrate direction quickly. We save the time we would otherwise spend exploring in the studio.
